What is laughing gas, and what does it do?
Laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, is a mild sedative used in dentistry to help patients relax during procedures. It is administered through a small mask that fits over your nose and works very quickly. You might feel light-headed or tingling in your arms and legs; some people describe feeling a sense of well-being and euphoria. The effects wear off soon after removing the mask, allowing you to resume your normal activities almost immediately.

What type of anesthesia are used for dental work?
We commonly use three types of anesthesia depending on the procedure and patient needs:
- Local Anesthesia – Numbs a specific area of the mouth and is typically used for minor procedures.
- Sedation Dentistry – Includes nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedatives, and IV sedation, helping patients to relax while remaining awake.
- General Anesthesia – Used for more complex procedures, rendering patients completely unconscious.
